Radford Man Dies 3 Days After Brutal Beating

A 39-year-old Radford, Virginia, man who was found with a severe head injury on Friday, August 19, has died, reports The Roanoke Times, and a 24-year-old Chesterfield man has been charged with aggravated malicious wounding for inflicting the victim’s injuries.

Lieutenant Andy Wilburn told the newspaper that the victim died on Monday, August 22, as a result of his injuries.

The man was discovered on Friday around 11:45 p.m. lying unresponsive on a sidewalk at the 1400 block of East Main Street near the Radford Farmers Market. Earlier a call had come in from witnesses reporting an assault.

The unconscious man was transported to Carilion New River Valley Medical Center in Christiansburg, but was later flown to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital.

The man never regained consciousness before his death.

On Wednesday a 24-year-old man, who is a student at Radford University, turned himself into Radford police in connection with the victim’s death.

The investigation into this Virginia fatality is ongoing. In the meantime, the man who turned himself in is being held at the New River Valley Regional Jail without bond.

Dump Truck Crash in Roanoke Causes Fuel Spill

A dump truck crash in Roanoke, Virginia, on Wednesday, August 17, caused a fuel spill on Old Mill Road.

The accident occurred around 3:30 a.m. when a 21-year-old Blacksburg, Virginia, resident was traveling down Old Mill Road in a dump truck that belongs to JPAC of Christiansburg.

According to WSLS, the driver ran off the right side of the road at the 6500 block, flipping the truck onto its side and rolling into a creek. The man, who was wearing a seatbelt, was not hurt, but the truck’s load of dirt and rock, as well as 10 gallons of diesel fuel, spilled into the creek along the roadside.

VDOT and HAZMAT teams were on the scene on Wednesday to manage clean-up. Old Rill Road was closed for about three hours.

The driver has been charged with failure to maintain control of his vehicle. Alcohol is not believed to be a factor in the crash.

Motorcycle, SUV Collide in Roanoke, Killing 1

A 19-year-old motorcyclist lost his life Monday, August 8, when his motorcycle collided head-on with an SUV in Roanoke, Virginia, around 7 p.m.

The accident occurred as the victim and a friend were riding their motorcycles on Hollins Road, which they’d turned onto after riding on Williamson Road and Plantation Road.

The victim’s friend reports that they were traveling at 25 miles over the speed limit and that his friend lost control of his 2003 Honda CBR600RR sport motorcycle and hit an oncoming SUV head-on. The motorcyclist went beneath the vehicle, while his motorcycle skidded across the pavement.

“[The victim’s] bike went right in front of me,” said the friend in an interview with Roanoke.com. “He was just so close. It was so quick.”

The victim, a graduate of William Fleming High School, was wearing a helmet during the crash. Though his friend tried to remove him from beneath the SUV, he died at the scene.

The street was closed for more than three hours as police reconstructed the accident.

1 Dead, 2 Injured in Single-Vehicle Crash in Gretna

August 4, 2011

A Ringold, Virginia, man died on Wednesday, August 3, when the car he was riding in ran off the road and overturned, ejecting him.

The crash occurred in Gretna, Virginia, around 6 p.m. on U.S. 29. A 1997 Ford Explorer that was traveling southbound ran off the road, then veered and overcorrected, flipping the vehicle.

The News & Advance reports that the Explorer overturned five times, throwing a 61-year-old male passenger from the vehicle. He was pronounced dead a the scene.

The Explorer’s driver had to be airlifted to a nearby hospital and yet another passenger was taken to a hospital by ambulance.

A portion of U.S. 29 was closed for about 40 minutes after the wreck.

Virginia State Trooper T.S. Bullington told The News & Advance that neither speed nor alcohol were a factor in the crash and that the investigation is ongoing.
