Drunk Driving Simulation Drill at Virginia Tech Campus

August 30, 2012

With students having recently returned to campuses across the state of Virginia, there will soon be an increase in social events where alcohol is served, such as back-to-school parties and tailgating for football games. These events can often lead to partygoers who have had too much to drink getting behind the wheel and causing a Roanoke Car Accident.

To help curtail drunk driving, especially amongst young people, several law enforcement and rescue agencies have come together to put on a demonstration on the campus of Virginia Tech in Blacksburg to teach about the dangers of drunk driving. According to an article from WSLS 10 News, the demonstration will feature a live scene of a simulated drunk driving accident and is set to begin today at 5:30 p.m. off of Drillfield Drive, between Davidson Hall and Sandy Hall.

During the demonstration, spectators will be able to watch as dead and injured victims of the crash are cleared from the scene by ambulance and helicopter, as well as the ramifications that a drunk driver who causes such an accident will face.

Drunk driving is a leading cause of fatal motor vehicle accidents, yet is 100 percent preventable. This is exactly why the Lynchburg Personal Injury Lawyers with the Skolrood Law Firm encourage those who are available to attend this insightful event, while also asking that we each do our part to keep Virginia’s roads safe by never drinking and driving.

No Seat Belts Considered Contributing Factor in Fatal I-81 Crash

July 5, 2012

Studies have long shown that seat belt usage significantly increases the chances of survival while also decreasing the risk of injury in an accident by as much as 50 percent. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports that seat belts save as many as 14,000 lives each year.

Unfortunately, a recent accident involving an unbelted 73-year-old woman from Carrollton, Virginia ended in tragedy. According to WDBJ 7 News, the woman was killed and her husband was left injured due to a Roanoke Car Accident. The crash happened on I-81 at around 1:20 p.m. this past Tuesday.

Reports indicate that the couple was traveling northbound on the highway, with two young children riding in the rear passenger seat when their SUV veered off the shoulder of the road. The driver jerked the wheel back toward the highway, causing the vehicle to roll several times before coming to rest.

The victim and her husband, neither of whom were wearing seat belts, were both ejected from the vehicle, which killed the woman and left her husband seriously injured. Troopers say it is highly likely the woman would have survived and her husband’s injuries would have been less severe had they been buckled in at the time of the crash.

Olympic Hopeful Overcoming Odds Following Traumatic Brain Injury

June 7, 2012

A US women’s volleyball star is overcoming great odds presented to her by a traumatic brain injury that occurred just last year. In a story ran by FOX Sports News, the player says that despite lingering effects of the injury, she is still hopeful to play in the Olympics this summer.

The 34-year-old woman suffered the injury in April of 2011, when a bus that she and her team were riding on in Brazil overturned. At first, the injury appeared to be minor cuts and bruises, but later it was discovered that there was bleeding and swelling in the left hemisphere of her brain. This forced doctors to put her into a medically induced coma.

Since the accident, her vision and sense of balance have not fully returned, despite her strict training regimen. She says that medical professionals have told her that, “…with a brain injury, you have to wait for the brain. It’s a unique thing, you have no control of it and every individual is different.”

The injury forced the woman to adapt her playing style to better fit the needs of her team, and her skills will hopefully win her a spot playing on the Olympic team.

The Virginia Personal Injury Lawyers with the Skolrood Law Firm understand just how difficult overcoming a traumatic brain injury can be and would like to wish this inspiring athlete the best of luck in her pursuit of Olympic gold this summer.

Lack Of Seat Belts in Car Crash Kills Three, Injures One

May 31, 2012

A four-vehicle collision in Franklin County, Virginia, killed three people earlier this month. According to WSLS 10 News, the accident occurred on Saturday, May 5, just before 9:00 p.m. along Route 220, near Boones Mill.

Virginia State Police stated that the 52-year-old driver of a 1992 Dodge pickup truck was traveling in the wrong direction along the highway when he collided head-on with a 2004 Chrysler Sebring driven by a 60-year-old man from Rocky Mount. Two vehicles that were traveling behind the Sebring moments before the initial collision were unable to stop and also collided with the wreckage from the first accident.

The driver of the Dodge pickup truck was not wearing a seatbelt and was declared dead by a medical examiner at the scene. Also not properly restrained in the accident was the driver of the Chrysler and his 26-year-old son. Both men were also declared dead at the scene.

A 46-year-old woman who was involved in the secondary crash suffered minor injuries and was transported to a local hospital for treatment.

The Virginia Personal Injury Lawyers with the Skolrood Law Firm say that this Virginia Car Accident highlights the importance of always buckling up your seatbelt before the vehicle moves. The firm would also like to remind parents of the importance of making sure your children are properly restrained in a child safety seat any time they ride in a vehicle.

Medical Mistakes Affect Thousands Of Virginians Each Year

May 3, 2012

HealthGrades estimates that approximately 195,000 Americans die each year because of preventable hospital mistakes, and hundreds of thousands more individuals are hurt as a result of these accidents.

These injuries can range from something as simple as a medication error to a botched surgery. Recently, a bizarre case of hospital error occurred last month in a Virginia hospital. According to an article released by the Duluth News Tribune, a woman who had just given birth at the facility was given the wrong child, sending both sets of parents into a panic.

The accident occurred, according to hospital officials, because of an outdated card ID system the hospital had in place to identify both mother and child failed. The failure occurred when staff failed to change the child’s cards when the mother moved rooms and another woman was brought in. Failure by hospital staff to check both mother and child’s hospital ID bracelets for a match also was a contributing factor in the mistake.

The hospital stated that in response to the incident, they have installed a new ID system that has an auditory alarm that will sound if the mother and child’s bracelets do not match.

Accidents resulting in the need for a Virginia Medical Malpractice Lawyer are simply caused by negligent medical staff. If you’ve been injured under a doctor’s care, a Virginia Personal Injury Lawyer with the Skolrood Law Firm may be able to help you.

FDA Issues Warning For Counterfeit Versions Of Cancer Drug Avastin

March 8, 2012

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a warning concerning a counterfeit cancer drug that may be in some hospitals. According to a recent press release from the agency, 19 medical practices in the United States have received warning letters after purchasing the counterfeit versions of the cancer drug, Avastin, through foreign sources. The agency says that other facilities may have purchased the fake medications as well.

The FDA says that the counterfeit drugs are labeled Avastin, manufactured by Roche. Roche manufactures the drug outside the United States and is the sister company of Genentech, Inc., which manufactures it in the United States.

It was determined through testing that certain batches of the Roche version of Avastin didn’t contain the active ingredient bevacizumab, which means patients who took the counterfeit medications may not have received the treatments they needed.

Packages or vials may be counterfeit if they are:

  • labeled with Roche as the manufacturer,
  • or display batch numbers that start with B6010, B6011, or B86017.

The counterfeit drugs came from Quality Specialty Products (QSP), a foreign supplier that’s also known as Montana Health Care Solutions. Volunteer Distribution in Gainesboro, Tennessee is a distributor of QSP’s products. The FDA asks that medical staff with products from these suppliers contact them immediately.

Reports from the Amherst County sheriff’s deputies say that the tow truck driver was working to load a crashed vehicle onto his wrecker. The tow truck driver was known for always being safety cautious and had followed every safety procedure while working at the accident scene, but another driver’s mistake cost him his life.

As he stepped to the side of his truck near the highway, another vehicle on the road struck and pinned him between the vehicle and his own truck. The man died at the scene.

Tassimo Coffee Makers Recalled After 140 Reports Of Burns

February 9, 2012

A home coffee and tea maker is being recalled after 140 reports of people being burned by the machine. According to reports from WSLS 10 News, the Tassimo single cup brewer has caused some victims second degree burns on the bodies.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced the recall today in response to problems with the T Discs used to make the hot drinks. T Discs are plastic discs filled with coffee or tea that are inserted into Tassimo coffee makers to brew single cups of hot espresso drinks. The problems were reported with eight and 16-count packages of the discs with codes ending with 11213 through 12020. These identifying codes are printed on both the foil lid and side of the T Discs.

The injuries reported were by people who claim the T Discs became clogged. Once the brewer was clogged, victims say that the machine spewed hot liquids, coffee grinds, and tealeaves on their bodies.

While 140 reports have been made, 37 of those cases involved victims suffering second-degree burns.

The CPSC asks that owners stop use immediately and contact the company for a refund. They also ask that those who have accidents with the machine continue to report their injuries.

Virginia Tractor-Trailer Crash Kills One and Injures Another

February 2, 2012

A tractor-trailer accident involving two trucks along I-81 near Roanoke, Virginia, has left one driver dead and another injured. According to reports from WDBJ 7 News, the crash happened just before 2:00 this morning near mile marker 167 in Botetourt County.

Virginia State Police say that a 51-year-old driver was hauling two trailers behind his truck when, unknown reasons, the driver lost control of the vehicle. The truck began to jackknife, causing one of the trailers to smash into a guardrail, while the other flew across the median and into the southbound lanes of traffic. That is when another tractor-trailer heading south smashed into the wrecked trailer and rolled down an embankment.

The driver of the first truck that crashed was declared dead at the scene, and the driver of the second truck was taken to Roanoke Memorial Hospital to receive treatment for injuries he sustained.

The accident also caused a poison that was being hauled in one of the trailers, Thioglycol, to spill onto the highway. Locals were evacuated from the area and some are concerned about both long and short term health affects in residents.

Texting And Driving Could Become A Primary Offense In Virginia

January 19, 2012

Texting while driving may be illegal in the state of Virginia, but in order to be pulled over for the offense, a driver has to be doing something else wrong. This may change soon though according to reports from WSLS 10 News that say a new bill recently passed through the Senate would make texting and driving a primary offense, allowing officers to pull over drivers if they are caught in the act on their phones.

Senate Bill 219 was examined on Wednesday by the Senate Transportation Committee and approved by a vote of eight to five with one voter abstaining. Also approved was legislation that would make using a cellphone a primary offense for teen drivers with provisional licenses.

Sen. George L. Barker spoke to the committee in favor of the laws pointing out that drivers who text are more than 23 times more likely to be involved in a fatal crash than those who don’t. He added that making cellphone use a primary offense would “encourage greater compliance” from drivers.

The legislation will now go before the full Senate for a vote during the next session.

The Virginia Car Accident Lawyers with the Skolrood Law Firm know that statistically using a cell phone will driving is more dangerous than driving drunk. That is why they ask for drivers to put their phones down while behind the wheel.
