New Virginia Tech Research Facility Sets Focus on Cerebral Palsy Treatment

The Roanoke Brain Injury Attorneys with Skolrood Law Firm explain the most common type of injury sustained by newborns during the birthing process is a condition known as cerebral palsy.  Experts from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimate as many as four of every 1,000 live births will be affected by the condition.

Cerebral palsy causes stopped or slowed brain development due to trauma or a lack of oxygen being received by the brain. This can result in loss or impairment of motor functions, posture, and stability.

In an effort to help treat those who are afflicted with the condition, a $4.2 million grant from the National Institutes for Health will be used to build the Virginia Tech Carillion Research Institute. According to an article published in The Roanoke Times the facility will focus on researching new and innovative ways to treat patients with cerebral palsy.

The facility’s staff plans to use “high-intensity” therapies to yield results. For instance, children suffering hemiparesis, or weakness in one side of the body caused by damage to the opposite side of the brain, will have their dominant limbs placed in cast to encourage the use of weaker limbs.
