The Side Effects of Brain Injuries Can Be Unpredictable

A serious brain injury can cause profound changes to the way their mind works. For some, these changes can be positive. But for many, these changes can have devastating effects.

One man explains his brain injury resulted in him gaining the ability to solve complex mathematical problems and equations. He told reporters for FOX News that he was attacked 12 years ago in Washington and sustained a traumatic brain injury. After the event, he was able to complete difficult math problems despite pre-algebra being his highest achievement in the field of mathematics. He later completed a college degree in mathematics thanks to his new abilities.

His savant gifts were accompanied by other changes, though. The victim stated he suffered post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)—a common affliction among victims of brain injuries—that kept him confined to his home for three months. These are the changes that are more commonly seen in brain injury victims.

The debilitating side effects of a brain injury can cause an individual to change normal patterns in their lives, such as going to work. This can, in turn, lead to other problems such as homelessness. In fact, one study shows as many as half of all homeless men have suffered a traumatic brain injury prior to living on the street.
